Symptoms

Likely causes

What to do
- Check the fuel level if it's a see-through or refillable butane lighter; refill if low.
- For disposable lighters, shake gently and hold up to see if you can gauge remaining fuel by weight or sound.
- Dry the lighter thoroughly with a cloth if it's been wet, including the striker wheel and flint area.
- Brush the striker wheel with an old toothbrush to remove lint or dust buildup.
- For a flint lighter with weak sparks, the flint may be worn out; many refillable lighters let you replace the flint.
- If the lighter has an adjustment wheel or dial, check it isn't turned down to minimum flame.
- If it still won't light after refueling and cleaning, the internal igniter or valve may be faulty and the lighter should be replaced.
