Missing or damaged pipe insulation in cold areas

Symptoms

• Bare pipe visible in a crawlspace, attic, garage, or exterior wall
• Insulation present but torn, compressed, or fallen off in sections
• History of frozen pipes in the same area during cold weather
• Noticeably colder pipe surface temperature than insulated sections

What to do

1. Walk through unheated spaces (crawlspace, attic, garage, exterior walls if accessible) and identify all exposed water pipe.
2. Measure the pipe diameter to buy correctly sized foam insulation sleeves.
3. Slide foam sleeves over the pipe, or wrap fiberglass pipe wrap if sleeves don't fit the space, sealing seams with the adhesive tape provided.
4. Pay special attention to elbows, joints, and valves, using pre-formed elbow covers or extra wrap at these vulnerable points.
5. For especially cold or drafty areas, consider adding self-regulating heat tape under the insulation for extra protection.
6. Seal any drafts or gaps near the pipe (foundation vents, wall penetrations) that could be letting cold air directly onto it.
7. Check the insulation each fall before winter to catch any damage or gaps before cold weather arrives.
