Jacket zipper separates or won't join at the bottom

Symptoms

• Slider goes up but the two sides pop back apart
• Can't get the zipper started at the bottom
• One side of the zipper is lower than the other
• Fine everywhere except the very bottom join

Likely causes

• CommonInsertion pin bent out of shapeRepeated stress at the bottom bends the small plastic guide.

What to do

1. Line up the two bottom tabs (pin and box) exactly evenly by hand before trying to zip.
2. Insert the pin fully into the box until you feel it seat, then hold both sides taut.
3. Slide the zipper up slowly while keeping tension so the slider doesn't ride over misaligned teeth.
4. If the pin is bent, straighten it gently with pliers, padding the jaws with cloth.
5. If the plastic box is cracked, it usually can't be repaired and the zipper needs replacing.
6. As a temporary fix, a strong stitch or a decorative snap/button at the very bottom can hold the join while you zip up above it.
