Guitar won't stay in tune

Symptoms

• Tuning drifts within minutes of playing
• One string goes flat repeatedly
• Pitch changes when you bend a string or use the tremolo
• Tuning pegs feel loose or slip while turning

Likely causes

What to do

1. Tune the guitar, then gently stretch each string by pulling it away from the fretboard a few times and retune; repeat 3–4 times.
2. Check that each string has 2–3 neat wraps around its tuning peg post, not overlapping or bunched.
3. Turn each tuning peg by hand while not under string tension to check for looseness or grinding; tighten the small screw on the peg if it has one.
4. Put a pencil lead or a little graphite in each nut slot to reduce friction if strings seem to stick there.
5. Check that the peghead screws holding tuners to the headstock are snug.
6. If it's an electric guitar with a tremolo, confirm the bridge sits level and isn't rocking excessively.
7. Replace strings if they are old, corroded, or kinked, since damaged strings hold tune poorly.
