E-bike exposed to heavy rain or water, acting up

Symptoms

• Display flickers or shows odd readings after riding in rain or through a puddle
• Motor cuts in and out intermittently after water exposure
• Bike worked fine before an especially wet ride or being left out in rain
• Visible moisture or condensation inside the display housing

Likely causes

What to do

1. Turn off and remove the battery as soon as possible after significant water exposure, and don't attempt to charge or ride until dried.
2. Dry the bike thoroughly, especially around the display, connectors, and battery compartment, using a towel and allowing air drying in a warm, dry area.
3. Disconnect accessible connectors near the display and controller and check for visible moisture, drying and reseating them.
4. Avoid using compressed air to blow water further into sealed components; let it evaporate naturally instead.
5. Wait at least several hours, ideally overnight, before attempting to power on the system again.
6. If issues persist after thorough drying, corrosion may have already started at the contacts and cleaning with contact cleaner may help.
7. If the bike still malfunctions after drying and cleaning, an e-bike shop should inspect for water damage to the controller or connectors, since some damage isn't repairable.
