Windows says you need permission to access a file

Symptoms

• 'You need permission from X to make changes' message
• 'Access is denied' when opening or deleting a file
• Files copied from another PC or an old drive won't open
• Only happens with certain files or folders, not all

Likely causes

What to do

1. Close any program that might have the file open.
2. Right-click the file or folder, choose Properties, then check and uncheck the 'Read-only' box if present.
3. Go to the Security tab in Properties, click Advanced, and check who the listed owner is.
4. Click 'Change' next to the owner, type your username, and confirm to take ownership.
5. Under the Security tab, edit permissions to give your account full control.
6. Restart the computer and try accessing the file again.
