Symptoms
- Several devices in the house are stuck showing no internet after an outage ended
- Some devices reconnect automatically while others don't
- Restarting the router alone doesn't bring every device back online
- Devices show connected to Wi-Fi but not to the internet, even after power is restored
Likely causes
- CommonDevices holding onto a stale IP address or network configuration from before the outageDevices sometimes don't automatically request fresh network settings after a lengthy disconnection.
- CommonRouter or modem not fully cycling through its startup sequence correctlyA rushed or interrupted restart during the recovery from an outage can leave the router in a partially functional state.
- PossibleDHCP address pool momentarily exhausted as many devices try to reconnect simultaneouslyWhen power returns, many devices try to get an IP address at once, which can briefly overwhelm the router's DHCP service.
What to do
- Restart the modem first and wait for it to fully show normal status lights before proceeding.
- Restart the router next, giving it a couple of minutes to fully boot and start broadcasting Wi-Fi.
- On each affected device, restart its own Wi-Fi (turn it off and back on) or fully restart the device to force it to request a fresh connection.
- For persistently stuck devices, forget the Wi-Fi network and reconnect fresh with the password.
- Stagger reconnecting many devices rather than turning them all on at once, if practical, to avoid overwhelming the router's DHCP service momentarily.
- Check the router's connected devices list to confirm each device shows up with a valid IP address once reconnected.
- If a handful of devices still won't reconnect after these steps, restart the router once more, since a second restart after devices have had a chance to settle sometimes clears remaining issues.
