Symptoms
- Oil takes far longer than usual to reach frying temperature
- Power light on but no warmth felt from the fryer body
- Food comes out greasy and undercooked because oil is too cool
- Fryer shuts off shortly after starting
Likely causes
- CommonFailed heating elementLike other heating appliances, the element can burn out after extended use.
- PossibleThermostat miscalibrated or failedA faulty thermostat may prevent the element from being told to heat, or may cut off too early.
- PossibleOil level too low or too highLevels outside the marked min/max range can affect how the fryer heats and its safety cutoffs.
- PossibleLid or basket safety interlock not engaged (on models that require it)Some fryers won't heat unless the lid is closed or basket is in a certain position.
- Less commonTripped thermal safety fuse from a prior overheat eventThis is a one-time safety device that can permanently disable heating if it activates.
What to do
- Check the oil level against the marked min and max lines inside the fryer basin, adjusting as needed.
- Confirm the lid is closed and the basket is positioned correctly if your model requires this to heat.
- Set the thermostat to a specific frying temperature (not just 'on') and wait the full recommended preheat time, often 10–15 minutes.
- Unplug for several minutes to reset any tripped internal safety switch, then try a short test heat with oil at the correct level.
- Use a separate cooking thermometer to check if the oil is heating at all, even slowly, versus not heating whatsoever.
- If the oil shows no heat increase after a full preheat cycle with correct oil level, the heating element or thermostat has failed and the fryer should be replaced, since these parts generally aren't cost-effective to repair.

When to call a pro
Deep fryer heating elements aren't practically repairable for most consumer models; replacement is the standard fix.
Safety
Use caution
Never leave a deep fryer unattended while heating, and let oil fully cool before moving, cleaning, or inspecting the fryer to avoid burns.
