What to do

2. Start the scan on a wall section believed to be stud-free and let the device fully calibrate before moving.
3. Move the stud finder slowly and steadily in one direction, keeping it flat against the wall.
4. Scan the same area from both directions (left to right and right to left); a true stud edge should show consistently.
5. Once you find an edge, measure 16 or 24 inches away and check for another stud in that expected location to confirm the pattern.
6. Tap the wall lightly with a knuckle for a duller sound, which often indicates a stud, as a secondary check.
7. If using an edge-finding model, mark both edges it detects and use the center point as the actual stud location.
