Table saw blade height won't adjust

Symptoms

• Height adjustment wheel is hard to turn
• Wheel spins but blade doesn't move
• Blade height changes on its own during use
• Grinding sound when turning the wheel

Likely causes

• CommonSawdust packed into the elevation gears under the tableDust buildup is extremely common on table saws and jams the mechanism.

What to do

1. Unplug the saw before working underneath it.
2. Remove the throat plate and vacuum out visible sawdust from around the blade and elevation mechanism.
3. Tip the saw or access the underside per the manual and clean the elevation gears and threaded rod thoroughly.
4. Apply a dry lubricant or light machine oil made for tool mechanisms to the elevation screw and gears.
5. Turn the height wheel through its full range several times to work the lubricant in and check for smooth movement.
6. If the wheel still spins without moving the blade, the gear may be stripped and need replacement.
