Air compressor tank rusting from the inside

Symptoms

• Rust-colored water from the drain valve

Likely causes

What to do

1. Drain the tank fully after every single use going forward, while there's still a little residual pressure to push water out.
2. Inspect the water that comes out; clear is fine, rust-tinged means active internal corrosion.
3. Visually check inside the drain opening with a flashlight for flaking or pitting if you can see in.
4. There is no safe way to reverse or repair internal tank rust; regular draining only slows further corrosion, it doesn't undo existing damage.
5. If the tank is old and heavily rusted, have it pressure-tested by a professional before continuing to rely on it, or replace the tank/compressor outright.
6. Consider a compressor with a tank drain valve at the very lowest point, or add a moisture trap, to make draining easier and more thorough going forward.
7. Never attempt to weld, patch, or reinforce a rusted tank; a compromised tank should be retired, not repaired.
