Chainsaw chain brake not engaging or releasing

Symptoms

4. Pull the guard back toward the handle and confirm it releases smoothly and the chain spins freely.
5. Inspect the brake band for thinning, glazing, or damage and replace if worn.
6. Check the hand guard for cracks or bent sections that could prevent proper linkage movement.
7. If the brake won't reliably engage and hold after cleaning, do not use the saw until a small-engine shop repairs it.
