Sewing machine fabric won't feed through

Symptoms

• Needle moves but fabric stays in place
• Fabric feeds unevenly, faster on one side
• Stitch length looks like zero or very tiny
• Feed dogs don't appear to move when you look underneath

Likely causes

What to do

1. Check for a feed dog drop lever, usually near the needle plate or on the back/side of the machine, and make sure it's in the raised (up) position.
2. Check the stitch length dial or digital setting and set it to a normal length like 2.5mm.
3. Remove the needle plate if possible and clean out lint and thread from around the feed dog teeth.
4. Check presser foot pressure adjustment (if your machine has one) and set it to a middle, normal setting.
5. Lower the presser foot fully; fabric won't feed correctly if it's raised or only half down.
6. For heavy or slippery fabric, guide it gently forward with your hands rather than holding it back.
7. Test on scrap fabric of the same weight before returning to the project.
