Likely causes

What to do
- Remove the tank lid and check the water level; if it's very low or empty, that's the real issue (see the tank-won't-refill guide).
- Press the handle while watching inside the tank to see if the flapper lifts.
- Reconnect the chain to both the flapper and the handle arm if it's come loose, leaving slight slack.
- Gently wiggle the flapper by hand to free it if it seems stuck to the seat.
- Inspect the handle and lift arm for cracks or breaks, and replace the assembly if damaged.
- Flush by hand once (lifting the flapper directly) to confirm the rest of the system works while you fix the handle.
