What to do
- Stop flushing again if the bowl is already full or nearly full, to avoid an overflow.
- If the water is very high, wait for it to slowly recede a bit before plunging.
- Use a flange (toilet-style) plunger, not a flat sink plunger, for a proper seal over the drain hole.
- Push in gently first to expel air, then plunge firmly up and down 10–15 times keeping the seal.
- Pour a bucket of warm water from waist height into the bowl to help flush the loosened clog, if the level allows.
- If plunging doesn't work, feed a toilet auger (closet auger) into the bowl to break up or hook the blockage.
- Flush to test; repeat plunging or augering as needed.
