Cold or drafty floor

Symptoms

• Floor feels noticeably colder than the rest of the room

Likely causes

What to do

1. Check the space below the cold floor (crawlspace, basement, garage ceiling) for missing or falling-down insulation.
2. Add or replace fiberglass batt or rigid foam insulation between the floor joists if it's missing or damaged, following safe installation practices for that space.
3. Seal visible gaps around pipes, wiring holes, and the rim joist area with expanding foam or caulk to stop drafts.
4. For slab floors, an area rug or interlocking foam mat can meaningfully reduce the cold feeling underfoot in the meantime.
5. Check that any ductwork running through the cold space is properly insulated and sealed at the joints.
6. For persistent cold spots despite insulation, consider whether a floor vent nearby is delivering enough heat to that area.
7. In cases where floor insulation isn't practical, a radiant floor heating mat installed under new flooring is an option worth discussing with a contractor.
