Ceiling fan pull chain broken or stuck

Symptoms

• Chain has snapped off or come loose

Likely causes

What to do

1. Turn off power to the fan at the wall switch or breaker before inspecting.
2. Check whether the chain has simply detached from its small attachment loop on the switch.
3. If detached, reattach the chain's end loop to the switch's pull tab.
4. If the switch itself feels loose, doesn't click, or the chain won't stay attached, plan to replace the pull chain switch.
5. Remove the fan's canopy or light kit as needed to access the internal switch housing.
6. Replace the switch with one matching your fan's wiring, following the fan's wiring diagram or manual.
7. Restore power and test all fan speeds after reassembly.
