Symptoms
- Screen stays black or shows a spinner for a while after pressing a key or moving the mouse
- System feels sluggish for the first minute or two after waking
- Wi-Fi or Bluetooth takes a while to reconnect after waking
- Wake time has gotten noticeably longer over time
Likely causes
- CommonNetwork and Bluetooth drivers taking time to reconnect after sleepRe-establishing wireless connections is a normal but sometimes slow part of waking.
- CommonBackground apps resuming and catching up on missed notifications/syncsMail, chat, and cloud apps often have work to do right after waking.
- PossibleAn outdated graphics or chipset driver with poor sleep/wake supportSome driver versions handle the sleep transition less smoothly than others.
- PossibleFast Startup interacting oddly with sleep on certain hardwareThis Windows feature occasionally causes inconsistent wake behavior.
- PossibleToo many startup/background apps competing for resources right as the system wakesThis can extend how long it feels sluggish after waking.
What to do
- Give the PC 30–60 seconds after waking before assuming something's wrong, since some catch-up activity is normal.
- Update Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, graphics, and chipset drivers from the manufacturer's site.
- Check Device Manager for any device listed as allowed to wake the computer that might be causing delays (Power Management tab on the device's properties).
- Try disabling Fast Startup (Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do) to see if wake behavior improves.
- Reduce the number of apps set to launch automatically, since fewer competing processes can speed up the post-wake experience.
- Update Windows fully, since sleep/wake bugs are periodically addressed in updates.
- If a specific USB device (like a dock or external drive) seems to cause the delay, try disconnecting it before sleep to test.
- As a workaround, some people prefer using Hibernate or Shutdown instead of Sleep if wake issues persist.

When to call a pro
If wake delays are severe or the screen never comes back at all, a technician can check for a driver or hardware compatibility issue with sleep states.
