What to do
- Place the extender roughly halfway between the router and the dead zone, in a spot that still shows at least 2–3 bars of signal from the router.
- Check the extender's status light; most brands use a color code (often green/amber/red) to indicate connection quality to the router.
- Re-run the extender's setup using its app or a WPS button press with the router, if it hasn't completed pairing.
- Decide whether you want the extender to use the same network name as your router (simpler, auto-switching) or a separate name, and set that in the extender's settings.
- Restart both the router and the extender, powering the router on first and waiting for it to fully boot before restarting the extender.
- Move a test device close to the extender and check the actual connected network name and speed.
- If range is still insufficient, consider replacing the extender setup with a mesh Wi-Fi system, which generally performs better for whole-home coverage.
