What to do
- Force a shutdown by holding the power button 10 seconds, then let the PC cool for a few minutes before trying again.
- Check that case/laptop vents aren't blocked and, for desktops, that fans are spinning; clean out dust with compressed air if needed.
- If you recently added RAM or a new drive, power off, remove it, and test booting with the original configuration only.
- Boot into the Windows Recovery Environment via a USB installer (interrupt boot 2–3 times or use the USB) and run Startup Repair.
- From Recovery Command Prompt, run 'chkdsk C: /f /r' to check for disk-related freezing causes.
- Try Safe Mode; if it also freezes at the same point, suspect hardware; if Safe Mode loads fine, suspect a driver.
- If hardware is suspected, test with one RAM stick at a time and, if possible, a different drive to isolate the failing part.
