Symptoms
- Metallic rattle from underneath, often near the middle or front of the exhaust
- Worse at idle or specific RPM ranges due to engine vibration
- May stop temporarily if you press down on the exhaust area (not while driving)

What to do
- Have someone rev the engine gently while parked (safely) so you can listen and try to localize which area the rattle comes from.
- Once cooled, visually inspect exhaust heat shields for visible rust, gaps, or looseness by gently tugging (careful of sharp edges).
- If you can identify the loose shield, it can sometimes be secured temporarily with high-temperature-rated wire or hose clamps until a permanent fix.
- Check if the shield can simply be removed if it's only cosmetic on some vehicles (check local regulations, since some heat shields are important for fire prevention over dry grass, etc., and removal isn't advisable everywhere).
- Have a muffler or exhaust shop properly re-secure or replace the shield for a lasting fix.
- Address it reasonably soon, since a shield that eventually falls off can drag or, in dry conditions, pose a minor fire risk if it contacts something flammable.
- Check for other nearby shields showing similar rust, since they often fail around the same time.
- Keep in mind this is usually a low-cost, non-urgent fix compared to many other noise issues.
