- Dab a bit of the fluid with a white paper towel to see its true color and check if it has a smell (sweet = coolant, burnt = oil, none = water).
- Check the corresponding fluid level under the hood (oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering, transmission) to confirm which is low.
- Treat clear, odorless puddles as normal AC condensation and no cause for concern.
- Treat any colored, oily, or brake-fluid-smelling puddle as worth investigating further or having a mechanic look at soon.
