Garbage disposal reset button won't pop back out

Symptoms

What to do

1. Turn off power at the breaker and let the disposal sit untouched for 20–30 minutes to fully cool.
2. Wipe the area around the reset button clean with a dry cloth to remove grease or grime.
3. Press the button firmly and squarely with one finger; it should click and pop back to its resting position.
4. If it won't reset after cooling, check that the disposal is otherwise clear of jams, using the hex wrench.
5. Try once more after clearing any jam and waiting again if needed.
6. If the button still won't reset after a full cool-down with no jam present, the internal protector has likely failed.
